Each March the term of office for four (4) of our parent member category positions on the School Council become vacant, and two (2) of the DET employee member categories.

Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help inform and shape the direction of the school. Each member brings their own valuable life skills and knowledge to the role. However, councillors may need to develop skills and acquire knowledge in areas that are unfamiliar to them. The Torquay College School Council is a vibrant and hard-working body which has our students at the centre of all its decision-making. Representatives comprise both parents and staff with the opportunity to co-op two additional members as determined by the members.

Much discussion regarding the safety concerns of the staff car park, particularly 3pm pick up at the rainbow gate. It was agreed immediate action must be taken to prevent serious injury.

School Council resolved to proceed with asap -

  • A letter to the Shire requesting action on a crossover/separate entrance where parents’ cars enter car park

Thank you everyone for your consideration of joining the Torquay College School Council. As the number of nominations equalled the number of vacancies there is no requirement for an election.

We are pleased to announce the following parent members have been successful:

At its meeting on 12th December School Council members discussed the following –

  • Traffic management and the safety of students in the staff car park, particularly at drop off and pick up times

  • Consideration of improving the current CCTV positioning to prevent increased vandalism around the school

  • Ratification of the updated Child Safe policy

  • Consideration of facility hire fees

  • Cleaning contract

All School Council meetings are held at 7pm in the School Conference Room. The next meeting is on 17 October and will be a ‘closed’ meeting.

The School Council will call a public meeting at least once a year to present the Annual Report and a copy of audited accounts if an audit has been formally conducted.

School Council meetings might be ‘open’ or ‘closed’ depending on the content and confidentiality thereof.

The following matters are currently being considered at School Council:

  • Establishment of an OSHC Sub-committee to review present structures and management.

  • Considering Uniform Policy to include black tracksuit pants for Grade 6 students.

  • Discussing issues pertaining to Camps and excursions.

  • Impact of transition to online NAPLAN assessments.

July 31, 2018

School Council current initiatives include –

  • Continual refurbishment of playgrounds, including nature playground

  • Installation of new perimeter fence to provide safer environment for students (September)

  • Creation of International Food Festival – October 20th

  • Provision of school holiday program
